68 year old Andhra Mess – National Lodge πŸ†

National Lodge was set up in 1952 by Kotha Ethirajulu and the cost per meal back then was 25 paise. It was started as a small eatery but since Georgetown was and still is the financial centre of madras this place rose to a greater fame and popularity. The restaurant is still using Wood fired technique to cook their Rice, sambar, moor kozhambu etc so that the authentic taste and flavour of the food are maintained.

The National Lodge has been operating for 68 years successfully, and they are still producing the meals with same Quality and taste from 1950s to till date. The place opens around 12:00pm, and they have A/C as well as Non A/C accommodation and it is highly recommended visiting the place as early as possible to avoid crowd since they serve around 800 – 1000 servings on an average day.

Another thing worth mentioning is that this place serves pure Vegetarian food and due to which it is highly recommended for Vegetarians, and they haven’t compromised on taste and there have customers visiting the place regularly till date for more than 45 years, and they strongly guarantee that the taste is similar to what it tasted back then.

We visited as early as 10:30 pm πŸš— knowing that the place will be operating from 11:00pm but it takes them an hour to set it all up, so we waited till they were open for billing, and we had to wait more than 90 minutes because we were too early but once they were openedΒ  around 12:00pm πŸŒ„ we got ourselves a nice place and had the best food in our lifetime and the experience was simply amazing.

The Best selling popular dishes are the paruppu podi and gongura chutney for which locals love this place and have been a regular customer for decades. Personally these two dishes are the ones which made me realize the quality of this restaurant and made me fell in love with this place.

The Rice here is Unlimited so you can eat as long as you are full and the main dishes are Sambar, Rasam Vatha Kozhambu and a special mention to Moor kozhambu which was so delicious I had it twice and especially with the gongura combo it was simply amazing.

The Staffs were super friendly, and they explain to everyone on how you must eat the Andhra meals i.e. for someone who has never tried Andhra meals this would be entirely different experience as it is started from paruppu podi and there are lots of Main dishes too, so they make sure to explain on where to start and end the meal. Make sure to end your meal with their Dessert, and we got the Pineapple Kesari and it had pieces of pineapple in it and it was simply amazing.

So That’s it for the Review of National Lodge and this is by far the Best Andhra mess in Chennai I’ve ever been to and I would visit them again just for the experience of having a full on course meal. Peace out from Peppa Foodie
